Stump Grinding

Tree Stump Removal in Newmarket

After a tree removal, stump grinding is typically performed for aesthetics, to remove trip hazards or hazards to your lawn maintenance equipment, or to prevent particularly resilient species of tree (such as Manitoba maple, ash and willow trees) from growing from the stump. During your free estimate, our experts can help you assess the need for stump grinding.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the tree stump grinding process?

On the day of your stump grinding booking, our crew will arrive with our stump grinder, a machine that can pass through a 32” entrance. Our stump grinder is high-powered, self-propelled and hydraulic-driven. We use hydraulic controls to sweep the grind wheel back and forth across the stump, working its way into the ground.

Once the stump is ground up, the mulch from the grinding can be raked back onto the hole. Extra mulch can be removed for an additional fee or left for use in your gardens. As always, every stump grinding comes with Gonzo’s trademark cleanup.

Is stump grinding included with tree removal?

Stump grinding is not included in tree removal estimates because it is optional and requires completely different equipment. A tree stump cannot effectively or safely be removed with a chainsaw. Stump grinding can be booked for an additional fee during your free estimate appointment or during/after tree removal. Stump grinding is typically scheduled for a later date.

Does stump grinding fully remove the tree stump?

Stump grinding cannot in most cases fully remove the tree stump. It’s important to remember that a tree’s root system mirrors its branch system and therefore the stump and root system will grow deep and wide across your property. Stump grinding is mainly for aesthetics and safety, and is not a complete removal of the stump and all its roots, as that would require excavation with heavy machinery.

Can a tree be replanted where another is removed?

Depending on the size of the root ball, a new tree may be able to be planted within a few feet of the site of the stump grinding. With our state-of-the-art stump grinder, we can in some cases grind away enough of the removed tree so that a new tree can be planted in its place. This is usually only the case for trees of small diameters. Our expert arborists can provide their assessment of your particular situation during your free estimate.
